Length of wire and resistance

Cables are available in various sizes, lengths, and shapes. So, now we know that the length and thickness of the wires also affect the flow of electricity in it. In this text, we are going to discuss how electricity is affected by the length of a wire and how thick it is, how to figure out resistance in longer wires, how resistance changes when temperature changes, and how to use something called Ohm's Law to find out the resistance of a resistor wire. We will do everything in the simplest terms possible, even if our audience is just a 3rd grader.

However, before discussing the relationship between wire length and resistance, we should reiterate what is actually electricity. Electricity is the movement of small particles known as electrons. These electrons flow through materials, and resistance is what hinders their flow. You can think of resistance as a bump in the road that increases the difficulty of a car going fast. For electricity, the longer the Resistance Wire is, the higher the resistance and it is more difficult for electricity to get through.

How wire thickness affects electrical resistance

So, what happens when we have a long wire? Super conductors have the other electron pairs bond up, increasing their distance. As they travel, they collide with additional stuff, like atoms and other particles within the wire. Think about trying to walk through a crowded room; the more people there are, the harder it is to get around. Due to those bumps, the electrons lose a little kinetic energy and slow down, resulting in greater resistance. This the reason why electricity finds it easier to flow through shorter wires than longer resistive wire

But what difference does thicker wire make? There is more room for electrons to move freely in thicker wires. It’s like a highway that has many lanes compared to a small road that only has one lane.” On a broader highway, vehicles drive more fluidly and swiftly. In thicker wires as well, there’s more space for electrons to travel from atom to atom without getting hung up. It indicates that there is less resistance that electricity is able to flow more freely, which is extremely important for many devices which are powered by electricity.
